Joe Swift’s guide to fabulous roses for every garden

These beauties work in just about any space or style, smell great and can go in now. Here’s what to buy

The Times

In my new garden I have inherited a fine collection of roses. Some are climbers and ramblers, others are floribundas and gallicas. I’ve got wild roses, old roses — and many I haven’t got a clue what they are yet. I do know that many are highly fragrant (especially chosen for their perfume) and for me that’s an essential, non-negotiable characteristic in a rose. With so many available and new ones being bred every year, I’m not sure why anyone would buy a beautiful rose without scent. It’s a bit like a decaffeinated coffee.

I’ll be planting some new ones too. There are so many to choose from, which makes things exciting and also a little daunting. I say just go for it. Shopping paralysis
