Police are assisting ambulance crews responding to a medical incident at a prison in which at least ten inmates and staff were taken to hospital.

The prisoners, who were taken to hospital, are thought to have eaten the same food at HMP Lewes in East Sussex following what is suspected to be a mass food poisoning.

No one is considered to be in a life-threatening condition or seriously ill, according to officials.

The hospital has been closed, with a major incident declared, and a decontamination tent has been put up as a precaution, according to The Argus, a local newspaper.

As many as 15 inmates and prison staff fell ill after eating food prepared for a religious service, according to sources at the prison. The
