On May 2 more than five million voters in London have the opportunity to go to the polls to elect the capital’s next mayor from a list of thirteen candidates.
The election will pit Sadiq Khan, who is seeking a third four-year term for Labour, against the Conservative candidate Susan Hall. She is hoping that anger at the expansion of London’s ultra-low emission zones (Ulez) for vehicles will help her to outperform her party nationally.
While polls show Khan comfortably ahead there could still be upsets, not least as this will be the first time the election has been held under the first-past-the-post system, in line with the general election.
Previous mayoral elections used the supplementary vote system, where voters pick first and second-choice candidates,
