Many deaths in Amalfi landslides

On this day 100 years ago

The Times

From The Times, March 28, 1924

The beautiful “Amalfitan Riviera” has been afflicted by a terrible disaster. Great landslips caused by a cloudburst between Positano and Amalfi have caused serious damage and loss of life on the south side of the Sorrento Peninsula, one of the chief beauty spots of Italy and one specially favoured by foreign visitors.

At Amalfi the famous terrace of the Hotel Cappuccini Convento has been swept down on to the road, and the hanging gardens of the Hotel Luna have collapsed. The hotel, part of which is destroyed, is completely isolated but, fortunately, as the disaster occurred at 6am none of the visitors is reported to have been killed or injured.
