Munchetty grew up in Streatham, south London, and was educated at Graveney School, Wandsworth, and the University of Leeds, where she studied English. She worked as a financial journalist before moving to Reuters, then Channel 4 News as a business reporter. She now presents the mid-morning show for BBC Radio 5 Live on Monday-Wednesday and is a regular presenter for BBC Breakfast. She lives in Hertfordshire with her husband, the TV director James Haggar, and their cats, Xena and Bella.
