The NHS has begun a national review into ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) services amid concerns about a surge in diagnoses from rogue private clinics.
A national taskforce will examine care for children and adults with the condition, including whether it is appropriate to prescribe powerful stimulant drugs. NHS services are struggling to keep pace with demand. Long waits are pushing some patients towards private clinics which have been accused of overdiagnosing ADHD.
At a board meeting on Tuesday, NHS England announced that the taskforce would provide a “joined-up” approach to ADHD involving schools, GPs, local authorities and the justice system.
