Peter Blake: ‘I bought a railway station and converted it into a house’

The great British artist on his role in pop art, joining the Brotherhood of Ruralists and his love of chocolate (even though he’s not allowed it)

I was born in Dartford, Kent, in 1932. I stayed there until the age of seven. When the Second World War began I was evacuated to Essex for a while. Then I was evacuated for a second time, to Worcester, and then returned to Dartford again, where I stayed until I did National Service.

It was a comfortable existence. We lived in rented flats when I was very small. And then my parents bought a semi-detached suburban house, newly built in about 1936. Mick Jagger lived around the corner. He’s the same age as my younger brother. They went to the same school in Dartford.
