Dame Esther Rantzen has hailed Holyrood’s proposed assisted dying legislation as “historic” as a poll reveals that more than three quarters of Scots back the bill.

The television presenter, who has revealed she is considering travelling to Switzerland for an assisted death after being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, said those who were terminally ill should have the “right to choose”.

She was speaking as the Liberal Democrat MSP, Liam McArthur, prepared to publish a bill at the Scottish parliament that, if passed, would allow people living in Scotland with a terminal illness to be given help to end their life. McArthur has said he is “absolutely convinced” the “long-overdue reform” will become law.
