One of Alex Salmond’s chief lieutenants in the Alba Party has been acquitted of causing a disturbance in a Scottish town.

Chris McEleny, general secretary of the pro-independence party, which is led by the former first minister, had denied shouting, swearing and repeatedly kicking and banging a door, and maliciously damaging a door handle.

Sheriff Morag Fraser delivered a not proven verdict on both charges, saying there were “important inconsistencies” in the evidence presented, “so I have to give the accused the benefit of the doubt.”

In a statement after the verdict, McEleny said he intends to “continue to play whatever part I am able to in local and national politics”.
