A ten-year-old girl’s spinal condition has been left inoperable after her planned surgery was cancelled seven times in six months, her mother has claimed.

Jill Lockhart fears her daughter, Eva Tennent, will not survive due to the severity of her spinal curvature. Three of Eva’s operations at Edinburgh’s Sick Kids Hospital were postponed due to staff shortages, her family told the BBC.

Eva has Rett syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects brain development, and advanced scoliosis, which causes her spine to curve to the side. The twist in her spine is at 110 degrees, up from 60.89 degrees in May 2022, her mother said.

Her family said she had been booked for surgery seven times since September, but each time it had been cancelled.
