Queen Elizabeth wore the same one for 25 years; the Noughties Glastonbury set styled theirs with spotless Hunter wellies. For decades owning a tatty Barbour waxed jacket signalled that you probably went to boarding school or grew up in a house with a boot room. In 2024 its newest fans prefer the sweet scent of Diptyque to damp dog.

Forget fusty — waxed jackets have gone all flash this spring. They have moved well beyond the shooting weekend set and into hip cosmopolitan enclaves. Barbour’s classic Beaufort waxed jacket was designed in 1982 as a warm layer to be worn on country pursuits. Yet ask a fashion editor and they will tell you that, right now, this posh, practical item is quite cool.
