When Myrna and Adrian Whiteson first heard that they had been nominated for The Times/Sternberg Active Life award they were suspicious.

The co-founders of Teenage Cancer Trust, which has supported hundreds of thousands of young people through cancer treatment, recalled their uncertainty at a message inviting them to Downing Street in recognition of their achievements in late life.

“When I first got the email, I thought, ‘This must be a scam,’” Myrna said. “When I found out it wasn’t, I was amazed.”

The Whitesons were declared winners of the award, which celebrates achievements by people over the age of 70, at a ceremony at 11 Downing Street on Thursday.
