GARDENS

Joe Swift: our expert’s guide to laying garden surfaces

Whether you’re planning new paths and seating areas or relaying old ones, here’s what to consider

The Times

Being a designer, I love garden surfaces and have been known to go to far-off places and spend way too long looking downwards admiring what I’m walking on. Now I’m making some surface decisions in my new garden. There’s plenty of existing crazy paving, which isn’t as unfashionable as it may sound because it’s about the way you use it. It was laid many years ago, it’s uneven in places and doesn’t drain too well — the drainage was certainly tested to its limits during the wettest of Februarys. However, the stone is local and beautiful, and it’s far more sustainable to recycle anything on site.
