A hospitality tycoon has been given permission to build a mansion next to Balmoral, despite concerns it could “spoil the Queen’s favourite view”.

Alastair Storey, 71, purchased the Abergeldie Estate for £23 million after making his fortune in the catering industry. This also brought to an end the exclusive hunting rights the royals had enjoyed over the land since the mid-1800s.

The purchase entitled Storey to 11,500 acres of spectacular countryside, but the previous owner retained the historic Abergeldie Castle as her home. As a result, Storey has sought, and now been granted, permission to knock down a crumbling steading on the land to build his dream home at Bovaglie. He also wants to revamp a ramshackle farmhouse nearby as a house for visiting friends
