Passengers travelling from central London to Stansted were warned to expect “major disruption” on the rail network on Friday after a tree blown over by Storm Nelson brought down overhead wires on Thursday night.

National Rail warned customers “not to travel” between Liverpool Street and Stansted and Cambridge at about 2am. Train services resumed shortly before 11am.

Passengers have been warned to expect further disruption with cancellations expected to cause knock-on effects for the Stansted Express service until at least the early afternoon. The Stansted Express said on Twitter/X: “Train services running through this station are returning to normal but some services may still be cancelled or revised. Disruption is expected until 13:00.”
