Ukraine ‘ran out of missiles’ in failed defence of Kyiv power station

President Zelensky warns US Congress of need for renewed military assistance after Russia destroys Trypilska power plant

Ukraine was unable to prevent Russia destroying a vital power station near Kyiv because it ran out of air defence missiles, President Zelensky has said, as he warned that his country faced certain defeat without renewed US weapon supplies.

The Trypilska thermal power station was flattened last week during a wave of Russian missile and drone attacks on energy infrastructure across Ukraine. The facility was the largest provider of electricity for three regions in central Ukraine — Kyiv, Cherkasy and Zhytomyr.

“Eleven missiles were aimed in its direction. We shot down the first seven. The four remaining ones destroyed the thermal power plant. Why? Because we didn’t have a single missile. We ran out of missiles to defend Trypilska,” Zelensky told PBS, the US broadcaster.
