There are several waymarked walks around the grounds of Overtoun House in West Dunbartonshire. The estate is a haven for wildlife — look out for otters, pine martens, ravens, owls and woodpeckers — and this lovely route explores the estate on paths laid out by Lady Overtoun in the 1860s.

Overtoun House was built in the Scottish baronial style in 1862 by the industrialist James White of Rutherglen, Glasgow. White had made his fortune after becoming a partner in the family chemical firm in 1851, and he bought Overtoun farm eight years later, demolishing it to build his mansion, which was designed by the architect James Smith.

The house was gifted to the people of Dumbarton in 1938 and subsequently became a maternity hospital. Today,
