The Ashes

The Ashes is a biennial five-match Test cricket series between England and Australia. It dates to 1882, when Australia won its first Test against England at the Oval. The name was coined by The Sporting Times, which wrote in a mock obituary that English cricket had died and that “the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia”. Australia has won 33 times and England 32.
