As it concludes after 13 years, the Partnership for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) program held a final three-day workshop in Bangkok, Thailand. Since 2011, PEER has funded collaborative research between scientists in USAID partner countries and U.S. higher education institutions. This initiative has produced scientific breakthroughs, trained future scientists, built scientific capacity at local higher education institutions, and translated evidence into action. PEER’s legacy includes 168 projects spanning 18 countries throughout South and Southeast Asia. To celebrate the impacts of PEER’s researchers, #USAIDAsia Mission Director Steven G. Olive, along with representatives from USAID, The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Office of Naval Research Global (ONR Global) , SERVIR Global, and the Japanese Science and Technology Agency joined researchers from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam to highlight the value of working with local research partners when addressing local development challenges.

Today, the U.S. Government, through USAID, announced a new, five year commitment totaling at least $1.58 billion to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, subject to Congressional approval. This multi-year commitment will support Gavi’s efforts to immunize 500 million additional children around the world— saving 8 million lives. Since 2000, Gavi has enabled countries to immunize more than one billion children, saving more than 17 million lives, and significantly bolstering global health security. USAID Ukraine Mission Director Jim Hope and Japan International Cooperation Agency Director General for Economic Development Takao Shimokawa signed a Memorandum of Cooperation recognizing Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)’s support for USAID’s AGRI-Ukraine initiative. Ukraine’s agricultural sector is the bedrock of Ukraine’s economy, and plays a critical role in global food security, but Russia’s brutal war has created significant challenges for farmers to access the seeds, fertilizers, finance, storage, and export routes they need. Together USAID and JICA will continue to support Ukraine’s farmers, making investments to boost Ukraine’s agricultural production and exports to alleviate the global food security crisis exacerbated by Russia’s war. Childcare is not just a family issue, it’s an economic one. Yesterday, G7 leaders reaffirmed the commitment to upscale investments in childcare and women’s economic empowerment through The World Bank's Childcare Incentive Fund–of which USAID is a founding partner and leading investor. Investments in care work generate jobs, enable women’s economic participation, and lead to better developmental outcomes for children. Watch how Portia, who received training from USAID, in partnership with Grow ECD and Kaizenvest, has grown her business running a childcare center in Soweto, South Africa, and is now supporting her family, employees, and community: https://lnkd.in/g82__yUq #g7 #Childcare #SouthAfrica #
