  2. 'Araronson is still claiming the goal'

Southampton v Leeds (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Leeds United

United States international Brenden Aaronson made an impact last Saturday during the 2-1 win against Wolves at Elland Road.

The 21-year-old winger, who joined Leeds from Red Bull Salzburg this summer, forced Rayan Ait-Nouri to turn the ball into his own net from Patrick Bamford's cross.

"Araronson is still claiming the goal!" joked Jesse Marsch. "If you look at it I think you can see it hit him on the leg."

  5. 'It was nothing that played on my mind'

Chelsea v Tottenham (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Chelsea

Asked whether being subjected to racial abuse by some Chelsea fans while playing for Manchester City played on his mind before joining the club, Raheem Sterling said: "No that is the first time I even remembered it. It was nothing that played on my mind at all. I can't let an incident from individuals reflect on the club."

  6. 'I know exactly what I want'

Chelsea v Tottenham (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Chelsea

More from Raheem Sterling: "From going to Liverpool and manifesting what I wanted, then to City and living the dream and now back to London with Chelsea. I've got a good head on my shoulders and I know what exactly I want.

"My position is mainly on the wing but sometimes I enjoy floating about and getting the ball. I always judge myself on how effective I am. In the last game against Everton, I played in the false nine and I want to help my team.

"One of my traits is to try and nurture younger people. You don’t want a hostile environment for them to come into. You want it to be one where they can flourish. I had Steven Gerrard to look up to [at Liverpool] and he put his arm around me."

  7. 'Something I didn't want to accept'

Chelsea v Tottenham (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling said: "As a person, you strive to achieve. I felt my playing-time at City was being limited for different reasons and I couldn't afford to waste time. When I look back I didn’t want to see a decline and I want to keep that level.

"Since the age of 17, I have been a regular starter. But to get to a peak time in my career to and be playing as regular was something I didn’t want to accept. I tried to fight and change the scenario but it didn’t come.

"At first, I had a few options but this was the one that was tailor-made for my personal goals. It made a lot of sense for my family and with the direction of the club. They have been in four or five finals in the last few years and it made a lot of sense.

"I have a lot of memories and top moments at City but in the year and a bit that I was in and out of the team it made me value a lot of things. It was difficult and my kids went to school there but it's one of those things in life where you have to make the right decision for yourself and your family."

  12. Get Involved - should Benzema win the Ballon d'Or?

#bbcfootball or text 81111 (UK only - standard rates apply)

Guido: It is either Benzema or Courtois, anyone else would be a joke. La Liga and CL combined, Courtois had the better season but keepers don't win it often

  13. 'Wiegman wanted us to connect with fans' - Williamson

    BBC Radio 4

England's success at this summer's Women's Euro 2022 was capped off by record numbers of supporters attending games to cheer on the Lionesses on home soil.

"Another thing that Sarina [Wiegman] brought in is she wanted us to connect with the fans," Leah Williamson told Woman's Hour.

"She wanted us to be relaxed with that and you can have a good time whilst you're doing your job. That kind of vulnerability I suppose shows that we are human. Makes us a little bit more... takes us down off a pedestal.

"I don't think that was ever discouraged before, I just think that the English mentality of we go to work and we have to be hard face. That's just how we are and how we've grown up to be and I think it's not a sign of weakness to show vulnerability - and by vulnerability, I mean allowing people to see you as a human being.

"So, I think sport changes, and sport has the power to change things, and for women to be on a platform to show that they can't connect with people in that way and bring others up with them is the most important things we could have done."

  14. City agree fee for defender Gomez

    Simon Stone

    BBC Sport

Manchester City have agreed a fee of 13 million euros (£11m) plus add-ons with Anderlecht for Spain Under-21 international defender Sergio Gomez.

City were looking at left-sided options after failing to complete a deal for Brighton's Marc Cucurella, who joined Chelsea last week for £62.5m.

If not promoted to the first team squad, Gomez could be loaned to City Football Group club Girona in Spain.

He came through the Barcelona academy before joining Borussia Dortmund.

Gomez, 21, then spent two years on loan at Huesca in 2019, before joining Anderlecht where he played under former City skipper Vincent Kompany.

  15. BreakingElliott signs new deal with Liverpool

    Mandeep Sanghera

    BBC Sport

Harvey Elliott has signed a new long term contract until 2027 with Liverpool.

Elliott, who joined Liverpool from Fulham in July 2019, only signed a new contract a year ago and his latest deal is a reward for his continuing development.

The 19-year-old can play as an attacking midfielder or winger but missed a large part of last season after suffering an ankle injury against Leeds in September.

Elliott is now fully fit and came on as a substitute in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Fulham last Saturday in their first league game of the season.

  17. What's happening at Villa?

    Mike Taylor, BBC Radio WM

It’s sometimes the case that the value of a player – whether financially or in terms of general appreciation – increases when they don’t play, and that may well have been the case last weekend for Tyrone Mings.

Relieved of the Villa captaincy, Mings was watching from the bench as the team lost limply at Bournemouth.

Steven Gerrard’s comments to BBC Radio WM after the game regarding Mings have already been scrutinised extensively, and it is certainly possible that they might have been rooted in frustration at the result in the minutes afterwards.

However, it is perhaps because Gerrard is usually such an impressive speaker, and precise in his language, that the comments have drawn so much attention.

Mings’ qualities were regularly questioned by a section of the Villa support last season when he was playing, but since Saturday, his leadership has been widely celebrated. One of the odd parts about this little storm is that Gerrard explained that Mings has an injury "niggle", which might easily have been cause enough to leave him on the bench anyway.

"The easy thing to do after a defeat is look at the people who weren’t on the pitch," said Gerrard, making a useful point.

All the Mings fuss has slightly obscured Villa’s actual performance at Bournemouth, which was such a let-down after the excitement generated over the summer.

Villa have plenty of impressive, talented players, but the best combinations still seem to be elusive for Gerrard, as they were for Dean Smith at the start of last season.

How, to give just one example, are they to consistently get the best out of Philippe Coutinho, while also providing opportunities for Emi Buendia? One game is obviously not enough evidence on which to base big conclusions. But, after all the time and mental energy put in by Gerrard and his staff, no wonder there was so much irritation inside and outside the club after Bournemouth that they appear to have not yet cracked the code.

  18. 'It was a bit of a strange signing when he came to Arsenal'

The Athletic's David Ornstein has called Arsenal's decision to bring in Pablo Mari "an odd signing" as the defender looks set to join Italian side Monza on loan.

"Pablo Mari is jetting out of the Emirates Stadium," journalist Ornstein told the BBC's Transfer Gossip Daily podcast.

"Monza are about to embark on their first ever season in Serie A and they're looking to recruit, and they've turned to him.

"It was a bit of a strange signing when he came to Arsenal in January 2020. He was mainly moving around at the level he is going to play at now, so it was an odd signing. People at Arsenal thought it was just a loan, he ended up that summer being offered a four-year contract.

"So he's under lock and key there until 2024 unless this loan deal, that seems to be going through at Monza, is turned permanent; which reports suggest can and will be if they remain in Serie A.

"There will be a relatively small fee. Therefore, Arsenal won't be losing sleep over it. He hasn't played often for them and they have four relatively senior centre-backs. I think Arsenal will see this as a deal that suits all parties."
