Match ends, Port Vale 1, Rotherham United 2.
Championship side Rotherham moved into round two of the Carabao Cup despite a late scare at League One Port Vale.
The visitors hit the front in bizarre fashion when Georgie Kelly forced goalkeeper Aidan Stone into a rushed clearance, which bounced off Millers midfielder Ollie Rathbone into the net.
United had more good chances before Chiedozie Ogbene doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time, poking the ball under Stone after a slick team move.
Vale rarely threatened, but Mal Benning set up a nervous finish when he cut inside and swept the ball under Rotherham keeper Josh Vickers.
Port Vale boss Darrell Clarke made seven changes to the side beaten at Exeter on Saturday, while Rotherham lined up for the first time since the opening day after the postponement of Sunday's trip to Coventry.
The Millers could have led by more at the break, with striker Conor Washington denied by Stone and Georgie Kelly heading over, but a comfortable first half did not come without a price as the visitors lost wing-back Peter Kioso and Washington to injury inside 40 minutes.
Anton Forrester had the ball in the net for Vale after 54 minutes, but his effort was ruled out for a foul at the corner.
Stone made a sharp save with his feet to keep out Kelly's close-range glancing header before Vale's late show almost forced penalties, Cameron Humphreys stretching out a leg to cut out Gavin Massey's low cross and deny Jamie Proctor a tap-in.

All the Yorkshire football teams are useless and only know how to get relegated
Waylon is coming to the New York on Saturday, one will be in the Royals section but expects a warm welcome from the good people of Rotherham
Waylon has a soft spot for Rotherham who should never have been relegated last year
You can take Waylon out of the Royal County but not the Royals County out of Waylon though
Ya know what I mean !
Port Vale away one of the worst experiences in football as an away fan.
