Josh Benson's goal was his first for Barnsley

League One Barnsley knocked Middlesbrough out in the first round of the Carabao Cup for the second successive season thanks to Josh Benson's injury-time goal.

With the game seemingly destined for penalties, the former Burnley man slammed home a rebound after his initial shot had been saved by Boro goalkeeper Liam Roberts.

Chris Wilder's men enjoyed the majority of possession but failed to really trouble Barnsley goalkeeper Jack Walton.

Boro, who signed United States international striker Matthew Hoppe earlier on Wednesday, have now failed to win any of their three matches so far this campaign.

Barnsley boss Michael Duff told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"It was hard. Jack made a big save after a minute and it could have been a different game after that.

"Teamwork, togetherness and doggedness have seen us find a way to win and that's the most important thing.

"We're a long way from the finished article but results help."

    Nice to see MD has instilled the never say die mentality into Barnsley already cos last season they would have given up by the 70th minute .........along way from the finished article as a team but tonight shows they are certainly moving in the right direction and that we now have a head coach that knows whats needed and is bringing the right attitude to the job congrats, hoping for good season !!

    Total disrespect to a competition that makes us the most successful club in the North East for over 40 years!!
    I get that we have a small squad. I get that it will be a long season, but maybe I'm old school and think you should put your best side out for every fixture. If the youngsters are good enough then they will get a chance, especially with the 5 subs.

    Last year we were doing the cup knock outs, our own fault for a weakened team and still not signing the front men we need which was identified at the end of last season. Running out of time to get the players in we need, but fingers crossed Boro do. Good luck to Barnsley hope theyb get a good run and earn a few bob.

    Well played Barnsley. They tougher it out and got the result against a bigger club....again. Us Middlesbrough fans all remember the nights we've been the underdogs and done the same. Bit more finishing power needed for us again if we're to mount a challenge this season but there's plenty of time yet.

    I was at the game last night and I think we were the better team Watmore had two very good chances one to score and one to set up another player for a tap in. They go in and its a different, people are seeming to forget that Barnsley made a lot of changes as well but still came away with the victory.
    I am disappointed to be out of the cup but its plain to see that we are missing a goalscorer.
