About us
The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) was established on 22 December 2010 by the United Nations Security Council to continue the jurisdiction, rights, obligations and essential functions of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) after the completion of their respective mandates. The Mechanism — which in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1966 (2010) is “a small, temporary, and efficient structure” — started its operations on 1 July 2012 in Arusha (Tanzania) and on 1 July 2013 in The Hague (The Netherlands). It has since then operated in parallel with the ICTR and the ICTY and will continue to operate after the Tribunals’ closure, maintaining the legacies of these two pioneering international criminal courts and serving as an example of best practices in the field of international criminal justice.

“Where are you going, kid? Stop! Go back!” “As I turned around and may have made one or two steps, a burst of fire was shot at me, and I fell down.” This is how #ICTY witness Adnan Zec remembers what he endured as a 13-year-old boy amidst the massacre in the Bosnian village of Ahmići in April 1993. Today marks 31 years since those crimes were committed by Bosnian Croat forces against Bosnian Muslim civilians. Over 100 civilians were killed, including women, children and the elderly. #RememberAhmićiVictims #Ahmići #ICTY #MIP #IRMCT

For three and a half years Sarajevo was a city under siege. Its citizens targeted by snipers and shells. #IRMCT keeps the memory of the victims of the #Sarajevo siege alive and honours the survivors who testified before the #ICTY. #RememberSarajevoSiege

“They are only children.” Those were the last words that Shefkate Bogujevci, a 43-year-old woman spoke before members of the Serbian “Scorpions” paramilitary unit opened fire and killed 14 Kosovo Albanian women and children from the Bogujevci, Llugaliu, and Duriqi families in Podujevë, on 28 March 1999. Saranda and Fatos Bogujevci were among the five children who survived the killings. They testified at the trial of Serbian Police General Vlastimir Đorđević, who was convicted and sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment for this and other crimes committed in Kosovo. #RememberKosovoVictims #IRMCT #ICTY
