One of our Design agency clients just made a non obvious decision that led to a $5M client. You’ve got a mid size design agency. They lost their ECD to a competitor so needed to replace them. We did a classic UNKNOWN search. Looking at their competitors, their non competitors and sprinkled a little bit of WTF in there too. We ended up with two incredibly talented but very different ECD’s. One was a straight down the line ECD. Could be put in front of any client. Had one of the best portfolios and careers out there. The other was a bit squigllier. She’d been brand side. She’d ran her own digital studio. Perhaps less of an obviously impressive portfolio but very talented nonetheless. Hire number one would have made headlines. Hire number two, less so. They went for number two… Now, here’s the interesting part. It just so happened that the first pitch that came up was the new ECD’s ex client from her start up many moons ago. The ex client remembered how this ECD has managed to convince her old CEO (years ago) to invest in a digital rebrand that totally transformed their business. $5M dollars later and the new ECD is three months into her role and won one of the biggest projects this agency has worked on. Small fable to say… Sometimes obvious is absolutely the right answer. And other times, unobvious might just totally transform your clients and your business too. Oh and I almost forgot… Squiggly careers guided by self belief and curiosity are f*cking beautful.
I hope she received a commission or a % of that deal...
I think ‘squiggly’ is a great word to describe a career that hasn’t followed the traditional linear path of some of the greats. I’ve definitely squiggled my way to where I am now and couldn’t be happier with that choice.
Good to know. ECD Number 2 sounds more like me.
I have loved my squigllier career - great post, brilliant story.
A captivating tale of strategic hiring! The agency's bold choice in selecting the unconventional ECD showcases the power of diverse experiences. A reminder that embracing non-obvious paths can lead to remarkable transformations.
Squiggly career? I can identify with that!
Amen to that!!! Squiggly is the best test of character and path of the most interesting lessons if you ask me. Career and life in general really. Here's to the squiggles :). May more employers recognise that.
Being someone with a squiggly career – I love this!

1moCongrats to that legend! But tbh I know it’s said with good intentions but squiggly devalues the richness and diverse strengths of a non-linear career.
