About the app

What devices does the app work on?

The Guardian app works on all Apple devices running iOS 16 and above.

Is the app available in all countries?

Yes, the app is available in every country through the App Store. For more tailored content, you can choose the Australian, International, UK and US editions of our content in the settings area.

Why can’t I see sudoku, quizzes or polls?

We’re working hard to bring every piece of Guardian content to the apps. Currently there is a very small amount of content that does not work on mobile devices. We hope to change this in the future.

I am having issues with the crosswords in the app

We are aware of problems with crosswords in the app on occasions and these issues are passed to the development team who will be keen to investigate. To get the best experience of Guardian’s crossword and other puzzles like Sudoku, you might want to consider our standalone Puzzles app. If you need help with your subscription, please contact [email protected] and we will be able to help you.

Getting a ‘Video must be visible to play’ error message

We are aware of this problem with this error message in the app when playing videos occasionally. This is a problem with the Youtube component which is used to play videos in the app whereby the error is shown if the video is not placed correctly on the screen. Please could you make sure that the video is placed at the top or just below the top action bar so that the video is in full view of the screen (or as much as can be seen on your screen).

Making your app more personal

What has happened to my personalised homepage?

We’ve removed the ability to edit the homepage because we know readers come to us to be informed on what’s important in the world and that’s as much in how we curate and present our journalism as it is what we report. We believe it’s important for the homepage reading experience in the Guardian app and across our digital platforms to be clear and consistent. People come to us for our expertise and we don’t want that hidden or to limit discoverability.

We do understand many readers have specialist areas that they want to see more of and others they want to avoid. We believe My Guardian is a much better way to do this - offering an enhanced level of control for people wanting to build their own bespoke feed while allowing the Guardian homepage to always be visible as intended to all.

For further assistance with MyGuardian, please visit Personalising your app.

How can I choose which notifications I get?

As well as breaking news, you can choose to get notifications from your favourite contributors, liveblogs, series, and football (soccer) teams and matches.

For contributors, open an article and tap on the contributor’s name. The ‘Follow contributor’ option is at the top of the page. This will send you a notification when that person publishes a new article

Following a football team will automatically send you goal alerts when they score. Search for your team or tap on their crest on a football page. The ‘Get notifications’ option is at the top of the page

Following a liveblog will send you a notification when a key event happens in that story. To enable this, tap the ‘Get alerts on this story’ option near the top of any liveblog

How can I manage or stop the notifications I receive?

  • You can manage your alerts from the settings area. Here, you can choose the alerts you no longer wish to receive or unsubscribe from all of them.

  • Tap on the yellow menu icon

  • Tap on the settings icon at the bottom of the screen (the button looks like a cogwheel)

  • Select ‘Notifications’

  • Then adjust your settings accordingly

How can I change the font-size of articles?

In any article, tap on the AA icon towards the top right-hand corner, and then use the control to change the text. This will change the size of the text in the main portion or the article. Your choice will be remembered for every article you then visit.

I keep seeing Australian content in my feed even though I am on the UK/US/INT edition

The Live feature shows every news story we publish as we publish it. This means at different times of day stories from different regions will be more prevalent. In UK evenings, US stories will appear more often, and in UK mornings, Australian stories will - while stories from other regions will always be being published, most UK stories will be published in UK daytime, due to that being when most news happens here.

Cancellation requests will be confirmed within 48 hours.

All the Guardian content is available on the mobile and desktop version of the website free of charge.

You can install the app on a maximum of ten devices using the one subscription account.

I have an Apple subscription but I have now swapped over to a new Android phone (or vice versa)

At the moment, you can use your Premium app subscription across as many devices as you’d like within the same device ecosystem. This means that, if you have purchased a Premium subscription through Apple, you can use the subscription across unlimited Apple devices. The same applies to any subscription purchase through Google; there is no limit for how many Google devices you can access your subscription through.

With this in mind, if you have both Apple and Google devices, then we recommend you purchase our Digital subscription. Our Digital subscription gives you access to the Premium app across both Google and Apple devices as well as access to our Editions app and ad-free reading on the website. For more information, please see the link provided - and if you would like any help upgrading from a Premium app subscription to our Digital subscription, please get in contact with the team at [email protected] and they will be able to assist you.

How do I stop the Read to me articles?

To stop articles from reading out to you once it is playing, pull down from the top of the app and a dialogue box will be shown with the article playing. Here you can stop this from playing and swiping right on this will remove it.

Offline reading and data

What content is available to read offline?

Once loaded content will remain available offline for some time. If you can see a link to a piece of content on the homepage or a section page, you should be able to read it offline. So simply open the app or visit a section to automatically cache all of the most recent content to read wherever you are.

How can I get the app to load new content to read?

On the homepage or any section or topic page, scroll up to the very top, then continue to pull down to refresh the content. You will then see the the loading animation while the app gets new content. All the content will then be available so you can read it offline.

Can I limit how much data is used on mobile networks?

We understand that some people have data constraints when on mobile networks. So we will automatically provide lower resolution images when you’re on a mobile network. You can change this option in the ‘Advanced settings’ area - found in the settings menu.

Can I save content to read later?

On an article, tap on the bookmark icon and the article will be added to your saved for later collection. To access your saved articles, from the app homescreen tap on the yellow menu icon and then tap on the bookmark icon in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.
