Painted houses line Pittenweem harbour like pastel stripes in a tub of Neapolitan ice cream. Fishermen haul in crabs and lobster from trawlers dipping and rising on the water. OK, there’s also a controversial purple mural of a ghoulish witch peering menacingly over the cutesy village. It’s a nod to the Fife fishing port’s past: in 1705 five local women were accused of witchcraft.

But the gurning woman on the wall is not why I’ve come to Pittenweem. Lucky for me, friends have just bought a house in Cellardyke.
