Reece James saw red as Sheffield Wednesday suffered a first defeat of the League One season, going down 2-0 at Peterborough.

The on-loan defender endured a first league start to forget for the Owls when sent off in the 34th minute for a reckless challenge on Posh's Joe Ward.

That was not the end of the drama as Wednesday assistant boss Jamie Smith was cautioned for a confrontation with his own player George Byers - who had been withdrawn as the visitors reorganised - moments later.

The Owls then relied on goalkeeper David Stockdale to keep them on level terms with fine saves from Jack Taylor and Jack Marriott as Posh upped the ante late in the opening period.

But Wednesday's resistance was eventually broken in the 65th minute when Ward delivered a sweet cross from the right and captain Jonson Clarke-Harris steered a downward header past Stockdale.

And Posh sealed the points to climb into second spot courtesy of a carbon copy second goal nine minutes later, when Ben Thompson's cross was headed home by Taylor.

    Very poor tactics from Moore, no Bannan, Adeniran or Bashiru, three very effective players missing, takes off our best player in Byers for out of form Lorfa, and leaves the dull, slow Paterson on for 90 mins. The red card hasn't helped, but Moore's tactics and decisions tonight were woeful. God knows what his line up will be for Bolton. He is limited in vision, guile and authority

    Good reaction after the Plymouth defeat, just what we needed, particularly against a potential promotion rival. Though upon reading some of these other comments, I never knew how fragile the egos of Wednesday fans are; would say they're almost as bad as Cambridge fans, though at least they're our rivals it makes sense why they'd be toying with us.

    Lot of Salty Wednesday fans on here. All looking for excuses all pointing the finger, moaning rather than supporting. It's never always the managers fault look at your players who was hungry when your down to 10 that's when your team should show some spirit grit and determination. Only saw odd glimpses. Red card all day. Up the Posh this little ole team keeps rolling the big boy's.

    We're 8th which is about where we will finish or maybe just squeeze into the play offs, no better under Mr Moore. Don't doubt hs passion and integrity but he is not a winner and all the while he remains we will not get promotion.

      Must have been an unusual experience seeing decent football played at Bramall Lane in the past few weeks. Nice lesser venues got the opportunity to stage stuff too even if it was only girls. Maybe distracted little minds from the chips on their shoulders too

    McCann eventually got his tactics right after their sending off. But the players who won it for him today were the ones he took off at Plymouth, and why we lost there.
