Bradley Johnson scored twice as MK Dons picked up their first league win of the season by beating Port Vale at Stadium MK.

Having lost each of their previous three games without scoring, it was a timely result for last season's play-off semi-finalists.

After 34 minutes of monotony, Johnson finally broke MK Dons' league duck for the campaign - and opened his account for the club - by finding the bottom corner from around 20 yards.

Henry Lawrence had to clear off the line from Ellis Harrison early in the second half before Vale goalkeeper Jack Stevens did well to tip away Matt Dennis' long-range curler.

The Dons' lead was doubled in the 85th minute when Johnson stepped up to drill a free-kick from just outside the box into the bottom corner.

The Valiants did pull a goal back three minutes into stoppage-time when Harrison headed in Tom Conlon's free-kick, but it was too little, too late.

    Nice win MKDons, hope you get positive contributions to mark the win. Might not get much incoming from SW London given their implosion at Mansfield, but for the Dons, it will be nice to get the season up and running and start to accumulate points.

    Good solid home win, late jitters notwithstanding!!

      Happy enough with that win, it was scrappy and we sure are a long way from the team we were last year, but we did enough. Stupid goal to conceded having defended well for most the game, maybe just put it down to the monsoon that hit in the last few minutes. But we are off and running. Pity you lost against Peterborough. I hate seeing them doing well.

    Nice to get a win tonight but we sure made hard work of it. 2 fantastic strikes by Bradley Johnson. Quality pays in the end. Impressive to see good numbers of Port Vale fans make the journey on a Tuesday night.

    Utterly bizarre decision from Clarke resting players. We are not Man City we need our strongest side out. Clear MK had no confidence and were there for the taking. A truly woeful effort that got what it deserved. Nothing.
    Huge Clarke fan but his team selection backfired big time.

    Defensive set up from Vale against the team at the bottom. Held our own but unable to break down teams due to lack of forwards. The team is very unsettled at the moment. The recruitment should have been sorted by game 1 but we're playing catch up at the moment. We'll be fine once all sorted but how many points will we have lost by then.

    You have to feel sorry for Port Vale. They got promoted as if they won the World Cup but haven't set themselves up for a long season in a much better league. It's not looking good at this stage.

      I wouldn't worry too much about the result, is only their first win of the season, and at 2-1 they weren't exactly dominating; worst case scenario is a mediocre mid table finish for them. Hope Barrow manage to get promoted this season, as after Wimbledon your club next comes to mind on that saying "Not in the wider interests of football" , glad you've defied that phrase by getting back in the EFL.
